Inland waterways instructors

Inland waterways (IW) instructors need a great deal of experience and knowledge on the inland waters of the UK, preferably on a variety of craft.

Prior to the one day instructor course, candidates must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Hold the Inland Waterways Helmsman's Certificate;
  • Hold an up to date First Aid Certificate, with an emphasis onĀ  hypothermia and resuscitation;
  • Hold a Marine Radio Operators Short Range Certificate or the old VHF Operators Certificate;
  • Maximum age limit of 65 years.

Most importantly you will have the ability to teach in a concise, clear and friendly manner.

During the course you will be asked to demonstrate or explain parts of the syllabus to the other members of the course or volunteer complete novices. Your examiner will help you develop your instructional technique and ensure you are teaching to the correct standard.

The course may take place on canals or river ways, and we normally use a narrowboat and a cruiser.
